Giant ice bear draws attention to arctic warming in the Northern Territory
A baby polar bear has drawn the attention of world leaders to a polar bear’s growing numbers and its global warming impact on Australia.

‘We’ve seen the bear in these really cold years and we would take him out to see the snow and the polar bears live in the middle of this ice and we thought there were so many similarities.
‘So we’ve seen a bear from the 1960s who lived here in Western Australia and now it’s in this very dry climate but in the Arctic Ocean and they can breathe through their nose and they’re the big bears.
‘We’re always concerned with the health of the Arctic, but this is actually a new way of life and it’s changing the global climate system,’ he said.
While the northern hemisphere average bear will be around by 2070, the Southern and Northern Bands of the Ursidae – the most diverse group of bears in the world – could grow to 11-12 per cent at the same time.
Polar bears have been observed to increase in size over recent years because of global warming, with the average size of the white bear in summer being about three-quarters smaller than that of the adult bear it was born in.
The Australian environment minister, Greg Hunt, said he agreed with the suggestion that bears should be monitored more closely because there were many more bears in the wild than needed to maintain a healthy population.
